INFORMATION FOR WOMEN ON PNEUMOCOCCUS VACCINE DURING PREGNANCY OR BREASTFEEDING
What is the pneumococcal vaccine?
A pneumococcal vaccine is a vaccine that is administered to train the immune system to recognize and defend against a bacterial species called Streptococcus pneumoniae. There are different types of pneumococcal vaccine, which differ depending on which strains of S. pneumoniae they teach the immune system to recognize. One type of pneumococcal vaccine called PCV7 teaches the immune system to recognize seven strains of S. pneumoniae. Another, called PCV13, teaches the immune system to recognize 13 strands, whereas another vaccine called PPSV23 teaches the immune system to recognize 23 strands of S. pneumoniae.
