INFORMATION FOR WOMEN WHO ARE MIGHT BE EXPOSED, ARE BEING EXPOSED, OR HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO PERCHLOROETHYLENE DURING PREGNANCY OR BREASTFEEDING

What is perchloroethylene?

Also called tetrachloroethylene, perchloroethylene (PCE) is a substance that contaminates the environment and that is present in industrial work places, although its use has been decreasing in the US and other developed countries. It is used often in dry cleaning as well as in industrial processes. PCE is a volatile liquid, meaning that it can be present in liquids such as water, and also turns easily into gas, so that you can breathe it in the air. It is known to be a neurotoxicant, a substance that does harm to nervous tissue, including the brain. For many decades, there has been concern about PCE contaminating water supplies, including water that pregnant and lactating women drink.
