INFORMATION FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE HASHIMOTO THYROIDITIS DURING PREGNANCY OR BREASTFEEDING

What is Hashimoto thyroiditis during pregnancy?

Hashimoto thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition in which antibodies from the person’s own immune system attack the thyroid gland, ultimately damaging the gland to the point that it is underactive (hypothyroidism). Also called Hashimoto disease and chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, the condition often begins when the immune attack damages thyroid cells, releasing the hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) into the blood, causing a period of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) that typically lasts up to two weeks before the condition develops into chronic hypothyroidism.
