INFORMATION FOR WOMEN WHO ARE THINKING OF USING, ARE USING, OR HAVE USED ECSTASY DURING PREGNANCY OR BREASTFEEDING
What is MDMA (also known as ecstasy)?
Known commonly as ecstasy, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine is an illicit, recreational drug that is very popular among young adults in the United States, Europe, and Australia, particularly in dance club settings. It is both a hallucinogen (an agent that produces changes in one’s sense of the outside world) and a stimulant that works by interacting with three different types of receptors on cells of the nervous system: serotonin (5HT) receptors, noradrenergic receptors and dopamine receptors.
