A virus is a microscopic agent consisting of genetic material called nucleic acid, encased on a protein coat. Viruses are somewhat on the boundary between living and non-living things. Like living things, viruses have the ability to reproduce, multiplying generation by generation into increasingly higher numbers, while evolving through natural selection. At the same time, however, viruses lack another property that is characteristic of life, namely the ability to metabolize, to change chemical into other chemicals, in the process consuming and or producing energy. Being in such a border zone between living and nonliving, viruses have stimulated discussion among biologists and philosophers on whether they should be considered to be a type of life.
