INFORMATION FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE AORTIC DISSECTION DURING PREGNANCY OR BREASTFEEDING

What is aortic dissection during pregnancy?

The aorta is the large blood vessel that carries blood from the heart’s left ventricle and branches into various arteries. Being an artery, the aorta consists of three layers in its wall: the tunica intima (inner layer), the tunica media (middle, muscular, and thickest of the layers), and the tunica adventitia (outer layer). Aortic dissection (AD) is a tear in the intima through which blood surges, forcing the intima to separate, thereby creating a false channel (false lumen) that can lengthen as the layers separate further along the vessel.
