I was not vegan with my first pregnancy, but became vegan shortly thereafter. I am hoping to get firsthand advice for maintaining a healthy pregnancy with a vegan or vegetarian diet. Advice on books, online resources, etc. are welcome!  TIA

I'm vegan! I was vegetarian for my first pregnancy. It's totally doable. You want to make sure you're eating sufficient protein and getting iron, so lots of leafy greens. I'd suggest looking for cooking books on Amazon for recipes or online blogs.

here for the comments. I have been looking into to transitioning to vegan; I have such a hard time keeping down any type of meat at this point... even chicken- I just didnt think it would be safe to transition while pregnant.
I am almost 21 weeks

Following! I have heard a lot of negative things about being vegan or vegetarian while pregnant. I know it is just biased opinion and from lack of research!

Here's a great article about being vegan and pregnancy:

I hope this helps! There are so many myths about veganism and pregnancy. The main items you will need to make sure is that you are getting enough iron and b12.

Yes you can definitely have a healthy pregnancy being a vegetarian. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits,  and have lot of varieties in your food. There are lots of good options and recipes once you become a vegetarian. You will need to make sure you are getting sufficient of calcium, proteins in your diet.

Oh I am just in shock that women do this when pregnant. It is NOT the same and not as healthy. You absolutely do not get the same nutrients. THIS PREGNANCY IS NOT ABOUT YOU WANTING TO BE VEGAN - You HAVE TO put aside any selfish behavior and realize YOUR BABY NEEDS YOU. It's really shocking that this is even a thing.

Please re-read the original post. I did not become vegan during pregnancy as is clear in this statement: "I was not vegan with my first pregnancy, but became vegan shortly thereafter." Also, what facts do you have to prove that a plant-based diet is not as healthy, that veganism is selfish, and that the nutrients (which nutrients are you referring to exactly) are not the same? The purpose of this post was to obtain firsthand advice about continuing a plant-based diet while pregnant. If firsthand advice was not pertinent then I welcomed various resources, none of which you provided. FYI, this is for future reference as I am not currently pregnant.

Caren, since you are following this post I'd like to point out that the comment by Jess proves your point. It Is an example of a biased opinion, and apparent lack of research (she did not provide any).

So unnecessary to insult her! Mom, please stop attacking each other. I see this a lot in forums and is so sad and uncalled for.

I would consult with your doctor. I recently transitioned out of a vegan diet. Everyone's body is different and some respond negatively very quickly to a lack of proper nutrients. I was taking four different supplements just to combat problems I was having. Not saying a vegan diet isn't doable but you have to be very diligent. Stay safe.
