If you have parents who don't live close by do you plan ahead your visits?  My MIL comes to visit very often, almost sleeps over every week even though she is only a 50 min drive away. Sometimes it makes sense that she does this because we have plans the next morning or day (let's say a family party).  I wonder how much it will change once we have the baby, and I assume the same or more.  I guess it's frustrating that my own parents aren't able to come by as much or at least last min and they only live 30 min away! They are actually busy with other grandchildren and my MIL is single and retired. So I get it, but just difficult to manage.

My parents live about two hours away, so we seem them about once a month.  It is hard not having them close by.  That is great your MIL comes over so much.

You're so lucky to have your MIL who cares so much. I'm in the same boat. My family couldn't care less, and my MIL is such a blessing! Cherish her!

We have been parenting pretty much ourselves all these years. Relationships with inlaws is strained and my family is far away. Wish it were different but there is no use crying over ideals that are not my reality. I will say it seems like a generational issue that predates our relationship. As much as I wish it were different it has made us a tighter family unit.

I always think of it this way... some families live together!  At least you have some private time alone and she hasn't completely moved in.  I like having my own space!!!

When you have the baby scheduling will be very important especially since you'll be up all night tending to your LO for a while. And I'm sure she will be excited and trying to be there all the time. I would talk about it before hand so there's no feelings hurt.

My parents live 10 hours away.  Before kids, they only visited once in 3 years. (Although I visited them more often.)  Once we started having kids, they were here much more often!  Plus they retired.  But they visit every month or two.

I totally understand. My parents live farther away (around 3 hours), but they only come to visit maybe once or twice, every other year. My MIL lives right down the road, but she isn't a big baby/kid person. She's been pretty vocal about us having kids and how expensive they are and how much you have to "give up" to have kids...drives me nuts!!

My MIL lives right down the road and never visits, and doesn't let us come over. It's sad really

My ILs live several hours away and aren't in the best health and don't travel much so we don't see them often. My parents live close by and my mother drives me bonkers sometimes with how often she is over hovering. I love her, and I know she's excited but sheesh lady.
