It is your baby and you have every right to worry. You are the mama bear. I would tell her she needs to bring a fresh shirt and not smoke while she is over. Even from her holding the cigarette and then touching your baby can transfer the smallest amount of nicotine to her. I would not worry about upsetting your husband I would be completely considerate and upfront and tell him that if he isn't comfortable telling his mom that you would. You can be completely upfront without being rude and no one needs to get upset. Just word it something like 'I do not want to upset you at all by saying this but I am concerned about you smelling like smoke around our precious baby girl, we don't want her to be exposed to smoke and god forbid develop breathing problems because of it. Can you the next time you come over bring a fresh clean shirt to change into before you hold her?"
