INFORMATION FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE ACID REFLUX AND GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE (GERD) DURING PREGNANCY OR BREASTFEEDING
What is acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)?
Acid reflux, more commonly known as heartburn, is the irritation of the esophagus that is caused by the contents of the stomach coming back up (reflux). Normally, there is a sphincter or valve at the lower part of the esophagus that prevents the reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus but during pregnancy this valve doesn’t work as well. Pregnancy hormones can cause the sphincter to relax which allows the stomach contents to go back up into the esophagus. Additionally, the growing uterus pushes everything up which also includes the stomach contents.
