What is flunitrazepam?

Also known by its trade name, Rohypnol®, flunitrazepam is a member of a category of medications called benzodiazapines. By enhancing the effects of a nervous system chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), these drugs produce a muscle relaxant effect, along with anti-anxiety and sleep promoting (hypnotic) effects. Consequently, flunitrazepam is used in some countries as part of anesthesia for surgery, and also as a prescription sleep medication. However, it is not approved for medical use in the United States. It is also notorious as an agent for drug-facilitated sexual assault, known commonly as date rape.
