THE SAFETY OF AMITRIPTYLINE DURING PREGNANCY OR BREASTFEEDING

THIS MEDICATION MAY CAUSE HARM TO YOUR BABY: There is limited information available on the safety of amitriptyline during pregnancy. Despite inconclusive reports linking this medication to an increased risk of birth defects, the actual risk of birth defects  associated with the use of amitriptyline during pregnancy is expected to be low. Tricyclic antidepressants are associated with an increased risk of neonatal withdrawal symptoms. Caution is advised if continuing this medication during pregnancy or while nursing a baby. Nursing infants should be monitored for changes in feeding, behavior, sleep, and neurodevelopment.
